Gray Panthers Commends Supreme Court’s Ruling on Marriage Equality

By: Gray Panther

WASHINGTON - June 26, 2013 - PRLog -- Gray Panthers, an intergenerational social justice organization, applauds the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that affirms that the federal government cannot discriminate against married people based on their sexual orientation.  Gray Panthers also celebrates the court's ruling that allows same sex couples in California to marry.

This nationwide organization has stood up for justice since it was founded in 1970.  Randy Block, Chair of Gray Panthers' Issues Committee, said, "We have made phone calls, marched, and protested for health reform, civil rights, women's rights and LGBT rights. We are committed to working to extend the equal protections affirmed by the Supreme Court to every state in the country".

Above all else, the Gray Panthers stand for social justice.  Since its founding, Gray Panthers have watched great progress in the areas of racial equality, gender equality, religious tolerance, and a greater respect for diversity.  Gray Panthers acknowledge that there is a long way to go, but they feel the world today is much more accepting and inclusive than a generation ago.

Gray Panthers applauds the Supreme Court for recognizing that equality applies to all couples, not just those approved by social conservatives. They are pleased that the Supreme Court has issued a ruling that advances the causes of social justice. For the first time in its history, the Supreme Court has recognized that the federal government cannot discriminate against married couples based on their sexual orientation. The Gray Panthers joins voices with those expressing their thanks and relief that the Supreme Court has taken us one big step closer to recognizing that elusive dream, equal rights for all Americans.
