Discover Fort Worth’s Historic Hotels in New Book

Local author shares the history of Fort Worth’s hospitality industry using vintage images

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - June 24, 2013 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Fort Worth’s Historic Hotels by Simone C. De Santiago Ramos. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images depicting the legendary hotels of the area.

Fort Worth, originally named Camp Worth, was founded as an Army outpost in 1849. The camp’s old cavalry stables became Fort Worth’s first hotel. The Texas & Pacific Railroad arrived in Fort Worth in July 1876, bringing the need for more lodging. Shortly after its arrival, boardinghouses and simple accommodations were quickly opened.

At the turn of the century, Fort Worth became a center for cattle ranchers, and the first luxury hotels were built. By the next decade, wealthy oil barons replaced the cattle ranchers, and the demand for larger and more elaborate hotels was established. Many of these first hotels were replaced with motor lodges and smaller chain hotels after the growth of the automobile industry; however, a few are still in operation today.

Images of America: Fort Worth’s Historic Hotels takes a look back at the development of the hotels and inns of the area.  By depicting the early years of boarding houses and simple hotels, readers can get better understand the evolution of the hospitality industry.
