ORLANDO, Fla. - June 22, 2013 - PRLog -- Great Summer Trek in Nepal – Lost Tibetan Himalayan Culture of Loba

Trekking in Mustang should be the first choice for anyone who wants to study ancient Himalayan history. The entire region is shrouded in legend, myth and mystery and the oral history is still carried on by the people of Lo (people of Mustang are called Loba the Tibetan word for people of Lo).

One of main reasons trekkers, scholars and researchers visit this region are the caves of Mustang. The caves in this region, recently the subject of a National Geographic documentary titled Cave People of the Himalaya (http://www.pbs.org/programs/cave-people-himalaya/), are thought to be thousands of years old and to contain the evidence of the lives and deaths of these ancient Tibetans.

Milarepa in the Caves of Nepal’s Mustang Region
Another claim to fame of this sacred kingdom is that of the residency (or presence) of Milarepa, the Tibetan wisdom poet. Milarepa lived from 1040 to 1023, and although there is some debate whether the Milarepa caves are in Nepal or Tibet, it is safe to say that either or both are possible. The founder King of Lo, Ame Pal did not claim the region for his people until the 1300s, and the land became part of Nepal in 1951. However, Nepal has always recognized Mustang as a land with its own sovereign Raja.

Travel to Mustang was (mostly) forbidden until the early 1990s, when Nepal opened up the region for trekking to a limited number of people. Today, there are more Nepal trekking companies organizing treks to this region, but it is still not popular like Everest Base Camp trek and Annapurna trek. It is more expensive due to the $500 (minimum) per person trekking permit, transportation to the remote region, and camping required for most of this trek. But, it’s well worth the time and expense to catch a glimpse of this ancient Tibetan culture that has lived unspoiled and untouched by the centuries.
