WellCare Donates $50,000 To Support Floridians With Disabilities

More Than 100 WellCare Volunteers Help Families During the Nation’s Largest Statewide Conference on Disabilities

TAMPA, Fla. - June 20, 2013 - PRLog -- TAMPA, Fla. — WellCare Health Plans, Inc. , a nationwide provider of Medicare and Medicaid managed care, donated $50,000 to help Floridians with disabilities attend The 15th Annual Family Café and Summit on Disabilities. This is the sixth year the company has provided financial assistance and other means of community support to help people access the nation’s largest statewide conference on disabilities.

The Annual Family Café offers individuals and families the opportunity to network with service providers, public entities, government influencers and families who share similar experiences. It is held annually in Orlando and features hundreds of informational seminars and dozens of keynote speakers, including Florida Gov. Rick Scott.

“WellCare has a long history of serving Floridians with disabilities, and we have developed a deep understanding of the unique challenges they face on a daily basis,” said David McNichols, WellCare of Florida President. “Through our sponsorship of The Family Café, we are delivering on our promise to help serve Florida’s children and its economically disadvantaged, aged and disabled by connecting them with the information and resources they need to overcome challenges and enhance their lives.”

“Approximately 3.5 million Floridians have a disability, and millions more serve as caretakers of family members and loved ones who have both physical and developmental disabilities, including spina bifida, autism, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, Prader–Willi syndrome, blindness, learning disabilities and more,” said Lori Fahey, president and CEO of The Family Café. “The Annual Family Café is a weekend that is centered on collaboration, advocacy and empowerment, and we are grateful to WellCare for helping to make this event possible.”

In addition to providing financial support, more than 100 WellCare associates, friends and family members volunteered at this year’s conference.

“WellCare and our associates are passionate about serving people and our communities,” said Tracy Schmidt, WellCare vice president and The Family Café board member. “The Family Café attendees include our members, our neighbors and our families. They are people who depend on us, and we have made it our mission to help them live healthier, happier lives.”

About The Family Café, Inc.

The Family Café began in 1998 as an attempt to respond to a specific need in the disability community: the need for information. In response, we at the Family Café created an Annual Conference to serve as a clearinghouse of information. The conference provides a unique environment, where families could connect with peers, commercial service providers, and public entities to find out what services were available to them, which best met their needs, and how to go about securing those services.
