Follow on Google News | Author takes the Paranormal/Historical Mantles Seriously and Refuses to Jump on the Literary BandNew historical paranormal novel stays true to tradition in exploration of genre.
The best-selling author of Chasing Clovers, began work on her follow-up novel set in the Old West, and was eager to incorporate elements of the supernatural but was concerned about falling into the trap recipe writing, where they simply 'add paranormal and stir'. "I didn't want to start just chucking mystical things in there, without care or purpose. Just as we've seen a lot of paranormal fans irritated by the 'sparkling' vampires, I thought it was important that I research the roots of Lakota spirituality," Kat took great pains in researching the historical and cultural elements of Lakota Honour spending months delving into Lakota healing traditions. She even threw out 30,000 words of a manuscript she'd written because she didn't feel it felt true to the characters or the historical setting. "It was important to me that I be true to their culture, and make the representations as accurate as I could, in the context of the story. Even down to the language—to the extent that I began corresponding with a Lakota-speaker to ensure the accuracy of the dialogue. I would have been doing a great disservice to not treat the culture with respect." The end result is an exciting new novel that will appeal to paranormal and western romance fans alike.
