By: C. Pharr & Company “We are excited to add two local, community-oriented retailers to 1800 Broadway,” said Pretlow Riddick, Criterion president and principal. “We are working alongside the city and Bexar County to revitalize this locality; the addition of San Antonio Bike Shop and Brown Coffee will liven up the experience in the area, encouraging residents and people from nearby neighborhoods to come relax, shop and play.” San Antonio Bike Shop recently opened and the new location is owner Clay Williams’ first store. Having studied bicycle repair at the United Bicycle Institute in Oregon, Williams is skilled in a variety of services, from tube replacements to bicycle overhauls. San Antonio residents can purchase, rent or have bikes repaired at the 650-square-foot shop that features bikes by Long Beach, California-based beach cruiser company 3G, as well as single-speed cruisers and seven-speed cruisers, fixies and city bikes. Residents and visitors can hop on these fun bikes and tour the nearby downtown or cruise through the neighboring historic districts. “Bicycles have always been a hobby of mine,” Williams said. “When I saw the 1800 Broadway building going up, I couldn't think of a better location for a bike shop. Mayor Julian Castro wants San Antonio to be one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the country, and I am eager to help him achieve that goal.” Brown Coffee Company opened in April of this year. This is the company’s second store in San Antonio, selected for its central location and the increasing flow of pedestrian traffic the area has experienced. With custom, hand-crafted blond Nordic Birch wood furniture created by local craftsman, Brown Coffee Company President Aaron Blanco has created 850 square feet of modern, inviting space. Offering a carefully crafted coffee and espresso menu, Blanco says Brown Coffee “has become legendary in coffee circles as a coffee purist's heaven.” The coffee shop proudly features technology such as the Slayer – deemed the “Ferrari” of espresso machines – that promises to please even the most discerning coffee drinker. “With a price tag resembling a mid-sized car, the Slayer raises the bar for craft espresso in San Antonio to new, dizzying, caffeinated heights,” Blanco says. The store also offers a full line of home equipment including grinders, ceramic brewers and filters, along with freshly roasted coffee from across the globe. These two new shops are located on the first floor of 1800 Broadway (http://www.1800broadwayapts.com/ 1800 Broadway is currently more than 80 percent leased and is one of many projects currently in the works specifically designed to revitalize San Antonio’s midtown area.
