Intense geological research has shown tanzanite's geology to be totally unique; the possibility of it occurring outside the current production area (and its immediate vicinity) is less than a million to one.  

At the current rate of mining, it is expected that the source of tanzanite will be depleted within 20 years, and many experts believe the gem will have disappeared completely within a generation. Tanzanite is rare, therefore, in both a gemological and geographic sense; its single source and limited supply means that tanzanite is at least one thousand times rarer than diamonds.
