Midwest Lawyers See Opportunities in Mass Tort Cases

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - June 7, 2013 - PRLog -- SOUTHFIELD, MI – Sommers Schwartz P.C., a leading contingency fee litigation law firm, co-hosted the first annual Great Lakes Mass Torts Seminar on June 6th at the Book Cadillac Hotel in Detroit.  Over 50 lawyers from the Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Minnesota and Michigan came to Detroit yesterday to attend the first annual Great Lakes Mass Torts Seminar (www.greatlakesmasstorts.com).  The event offered lawyers the opportunity to learn about mass tort cases – which involve defective drugs and medical devices.  Lawyers received a comprehensive day of instruction on how to start a mass torts practice and a review of current mass tort cases, including defective hips and diabetes drugs.

The idea for the seminar originated with Sommers Schwartz attorney Jason J. Thompson.  He described the event as an example of the “innovate or die” business philosophy. He explained, “Too many lawyers are missing the opportunity to help their clients by informing them of mass tort cases.  With so many satisfied past clients, they really have an asset base to tap into and can provide their clients with valuable information.”

The event kicked off with a networking party at Comerica Park and an evening Tigers-Rays baseball game. The one-day seminar connected lawyers with existing successful practices in a variety of areas – such as divorce, social security and workers’ compensation – with established mass tort lawyers.  The featured seminar speakers were from the co-host mass tort law firms of Sommers Schwartz, Wexler Wallace and Johnson Becker.

The seminar is planned to continue annually, alternating between Minneapolis, Chicago and Detroit to facilitate attendance of lawyers practicing in the Great Lakes region.
