DURHAM, N.C. - June 6, 2013 - PRLog -- Pleiades Gallery and the American Dance Festival

Collaborative Art Show in Durham, NC

June 19 – July 14, 2013

Opening Reception: Friday, June 21, 6-9 pm

Special Pop-Up Event: Thursday, June 27, 7:30-9:30 pm

Each summer the American Dance Festival (ADF) amazes Durham with the art of movement in modern dance. The New York Times calls ADF “the world’s greatest dance festival.” In honor of the ADF, Pleiades Gallery presents “AFD – Art For Dancers: Movement, Rhythm, and Form” through which member artists explore themes common to visual and performing arts. Art forms represented in the show include painting, photography, metal sculpture, ceramic sculpture, and metal-worked jewelry.

In addition to the opening reception on June 21, Pleiades Gallery will host a special, pop-up event on Thursday, June 27. The event will feature a site-specific improvisational dance performance by ADF students from the gallery to the adjacent Five Points Plaza, a presentation by esteemed choreographer Ishmael Houston-Jones on the relationship between modern dance and contemporary visual art, and a one-night-only showing of a selection of ADF performance poster art through the years.

ABOUT THE AMERICAN DANCE FESTIVAL

Heralded as “One of the nation’s most important institutions” (New York Times), the ADF’s sustained record of creative achievement is indivisible from the history of modern dance. Since 1934, the ADF has remained committed to serving the needs of dance, dancers, choreographers, and professionals in dance-related fields. Remaining true to the goals of its founding artists, the ADF’s programs are developed based on its mission: to encourage and support the creation and presentation of new modern dance work by both established and emerging choreographers; to preserve our modern dance heritage through continued presentation of classic works, as well as through archival efforts; to build wider national and international audiences for modern dance; to enhance public understanding and appreciation of the art form and its cultural and historical significance; to provide a sound scientific/aesthetic base for professional education and training of young dancers and a forum for integrating and disseminating information on dance education.

A creative laboratory dedicated to nurturing and sustaining modern dance, the ADF is an international magnet for choreographers, dancers, teachers, critics, musicians, and scholars, drawing them together to experiment, explore, learn, collaborate, and create in a supportive environment. Students and community members interact directly with luminaries in the field, learning first-hand from those who define modern dance.
