By: Motor Werks of Barrington Mercedes-Benz has officially confirmed a single engine option for the new S-Class: a 4.7L V8 direct-injection engine good for 449 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. This will be standard equipment in the Mercedes-Benz S500. A seven-speed automatic transmission will be standard, while a stop-start system and regenerative braking will be employed to help improve fuel economy. Rear-wheel drive will be standard, and a four-wheel-drive S500 4MATIC® model will be available soon after launch. Other markets will get the options of a hybrid powertrain, a turbodiesel powertrain, a 5.5L V12 engine, and a range-topping 621-hp 6.0L V12 in the top-of-the-line S65 AMG®. No official announcements have been made about whether these versions of the S-Class will make it to the United States. There will also be a bevy of high-tech features. CrossWind assist will adjust suspension and traction settings to help keep the vehicle moving in a straight line in strong winds. A new aluminum body shell will improve safety and handling while reducing weight. The S-Class will also be the first production vehicle with no light bulbs opting instead for LEDs throughout the vehicle.
