Follow on Google News | “Real Men Write” explores positive literary influences for Detroit teensThe Motown Writers' Network and Scribblers, Screamers and Other Wordslingers Magazine collaborate to showcase positive African American male author
By: AND Communications The June meeting features presentations by local authors Eddie Connor, Jesse Cole, Walter O’Bryant, Khary Turner, Caesar Torreano, Yusef Shakur and Shaka Senghor. Presenters will share about their books, give insight into what started them on the writing path, and actively reach out to young people to encourage them to follow in their footsteps. “The concept of ‘Real Men Write’ was borne out of a simple idea to get more men involved in our regular monthly meetings,” says J. Michael Collins, publisher of SSW Magazine and member of the Motown Writers’ Network. “But it quickly grew into a need to shift from reading news headlines about the tragic and often fatal circumstances of our teenagers by exposing positive literary examples. So ‘Real Men Write’ took on a deeper meaning.” The goal of “Real Men Write” is to explore positive, productive and literary-based ways to counter the constant bombardment of negative influences being directed at Detroit’s young people. Families and young people are encouraged to attend. The Motown Writers' Network's "Real Men Write" meeting is 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Barnes and Noble Bookstore on Wayne State University's Campus, 82 W. Warren in Detroit.
