July 4th SAFETY TIPS FOR DOG OWNERS 2013

Getting your dog ready and keeping your Dogs Safe & Sound on July 4th

Dog Training Tucson- Home Dog Training Bark Busters Tucson

In an effort to help our furry friends and be proactive,
we decided to release our safety tips early to give us humans plenty of time to implement our July 4th safety tips. It’s not too soon to start!

Our Independence Day celebrations is great fun for people, however, between our Tucson heat,  the noises and the flashing lights can all be extremely stressful for our dogs. Many dogs will even hurt themselves trying to find a safe place to run to. From the dogs perspective, they do not understand what all the excitement is about. Their hearing is acute—far more sensitive than human hearing - so firework explosions, excited voices, visual stimulation and smells can leave our dogs confused and afraid. At that point, all your dog wants is to feel safe again.

It’s our job, as the pack leader, to help our dogs feel and be safe. Waiting till the day of the celebration is too late. If you have a dog that reacts to the fireworks Start Now!

Year after year our animal shelters report that our July 4th holiday brings record numbers of terrified runaway dogs to their doors. Lets make Tucson the exception. Here are some suggestions to move in the right direction to become a great Pack Leader and help keep your dog safe during our 4th of July celebration.

Things To Start on Now

Always have proper identification securely fastened to your dog, get your dog micro-chipped ASAP
Help your dog discover a safe place (Den Like Place) such as a crate or small room with no windows (laundry Room). This is a natural way dogs feel safe. Dogs look for small areas to cuddle up in, this is why crate training is so popular. Not the Garage, it’s too big, hot and noisy.
Start desensitize your dog; you can find cd’s on line of thunder storms and other noises, play this for short amounts of time every day. Of course there is a little more to it than that so please Consult a Dog Behavior Therapist (http://www.dogtrainingtucsonaz.com) for additional help.
Start a daily training regiment right away with your dog. This will help show your dog  leadership. In fearful or stressful times, we want our dog to look to us for leadership not try to figure it out by themselves.
If you already know your dog is going to need medications, give your veterinarian plenty of advance notice to get you the medication. Also consider discussing alternative natural options that are available. Never give medications without your vets approval.
Introduce your dog to the Thundershirt- The swaddling effect can give many dogs the security they need in times of stress. Learning how to use this shirt correctly is the key to your success when using it.

Tips For The Day of The Fireworks (http://www.dogtrainingtucsonaz.com)

Be sure your dog can retreat to his/ her safe place (crate)
Keep a radio or TV on to drown out some of the noise
Keep the windows covered to keep out flashing light
Do Not leave your dog outside alone, even for a little while
Staying home with you dog is best or having a pet sitter stay home with your dog
If your veterinarian prescribed medication, be sure you administer them on time.
Some dogs like to burrow, this can make some dogs feel safe. In our heat, be mindful of overheating.
“Inside games” Try using your dogs favorite toy or game to distract him/her
If the Thundershirt helps your dog be sure it’s ready to go
