New Book Explores Hattiesburg’s Unique Past

Local authors tell the history of the area using a collection of vintage images

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - June 3, 2013 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series is Hattiesburg from local authors Brooke Cruthirds and Colter Cruthirds. The book boasts more than 200 vintage and modern images chronicling the growth and change of this Mississippi city.

Hattiesburg was dubbed "The Hub City" because of its geographic relationship to six great Southern cities. On a map, it appears to be the center of a great wheel, with railroad lines fanning out like spokes to New Orleans, Natchez, Jackson, Meridian, Gulfport and Mobile. This intersection has been a pivotal part of the founding, early history and continuing role that Hattiesburg plays in the economic and cultural development of the Southeastern United States.

Images of America: Hattiesburg covers the city's founding by William H. Hardy, the impact of the lumber industry and the railroads and the educational institutions that benefitted from the largess of local timber tycoons. The book also sheds light on the illicit fight that made John L. Sullivan the last bare-knuckle heavyweight boxing champion of the world. While, scenes of city and rural life in the 1920s, give readers a glance into their city’s past.

Highlights of Hattiesburg include:
•   Rarely seen images that were provided by public and private university and museum collections, as well as resident’s private collections.
•   Discusses the beginnings of the two universities in the area, University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University.
•   Shows the progression of the era by depicting the trends in transportation, fashion, education, architecture, etc.
