LaGrange native, Mike Smith, a self-proclaimed Atheist has announced his intent to run for Mayor for the city he calls home. With a platform parallel to that of the National Atheist Party it is with great honor that we offer our support for a candidate that puts the needs of the citizens first. Upon hearing about our support for his run for Mayor, Mr. Smith responded saying, "Thank you for your kind email. I am honored to accept your pledge to back my candidacy."
Vice President of PR/Marketing Bernard "Flash" Kellish says, "The National Atheist Party is honored to support Mr. Smith's run for Mayor of LaGrange, not only because he is an atheist running for office in the bible belt, but because his platform is solid and he is not accepting contributions. That to me is not only extremely refreshing, but an inspiration of things to come. In my opinion, America needs more candidates like Mike Smith."
According to his election website, Mr. Smith's stance on funding is this: "I do not want to accept contributions because the only way to stop the corrupting influence of money in politics is to stop the flow of money. We need public finance of all election campaigns, and we need to make all political contributions illegal." Combine that with a desire to increase minimum wage, more evidence of equal rights for women, better taxation rates for property owners and even a desire to make the city more bicycle-friendly and you have the makings of a Mayor who truly is "for the people."
In addition to being a Vietnam War Veteran, Mr. Smith is also an attorney [specializing in Social Security Disability]; he is a lifetime member of the NAACP, a member of the ACLU, and President of LaGrange Humanists, Inc http://www.lagrangehumanists.org/
