The Music Album that Should Never Have Been Made: "Vocalessence by Amy"

Award-winning songwriter / producer Randall Michael Tobin reveals the backstory behind the making of a modern Adult Contemporary / Pop classic

BURBANK, Calif. - May 19, 2013 - PRLog -- The way songwriter / producer Randall Michael Tobin tells it, " 'Vocalessence by Amy' was an album that happened only because of some kind of divine intervention. It really shouldn't have happened at all. One fateful day, an aspiring singer arrived at my recording studio to make a demo tape. She was referred to me by her voice coach, Bob Corff (a client I hadn't heard from in over ten years). It was supposed to be a routine recording session: singer lays down a lead vocal part while listening to a backing track; engineer makes sure the part sounds good; engineer mixes the song; repeat the above for one or two more songs."

Randall continued, "The first song, originally recorded by Céline Dion, went very well. As an engineer, I took notice; this singer is REALLY GOOD! Second song, more of a country style, also went well. But something happened with the third song (which happened to be an original by singer and her cousin). I put on my producer hat, realized that the backing track for this song was interfering with the singer during the choruses; and it wasn't something that could be fixed in the mix. I asked the artist for access to individual instrument tracks for song #3. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), those tracks were no longer available. What now?"

After some deliberation and false starts at reconstructing the backing tracks from scratch, Randall, now being musician and arranger, decided to try a different approach and rewrote the arrangement in a completely different genre and mood.

Randall recounts, "Upon hearing the new arrangement, the artist lit up! The next day, I recorded her lead vocal. Magic was happening. I decided to arrange background parts for the singer to try. She sang each part as if she had known it all along! Sparks were flying. New vocal parts were being recorded as fast as possible. A heavenly choir emerged from our collaboration. Goosebumps…"

The next day, Randall put down final instrument parts and mixed the song. The singer brought her mom to the studio to hear the final mix. Everyone was blown away. Randall thought, "Now what? The 'demo' is now a thing of the past. The other recorded songs will not be needed. An album has begun…"

The song was titled "Day After Day" and it set the tone for what eventually became "Vocalessence by Amy." The album was launched May 1, 2013, with the release of "Vocalessence," the video, to an appreciative YouTube audience who have supported Amy's debut with over 20,000 views to date.
