GLEN ELLYN, Ill. - May 17, 2013 - PRLog -- Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has declared the Glen Ellyn Backyard BBQ Cook-Off an official Illinois State Competition.  Such weighty distinction now allows winners of the Glen Ellyn Backyard BBQ Cook-Off the opportunity to qualify for national contests, such as Jack Daniels, American Royal in Kansas City, and others.  This year’s Glen Ellyn Backyard BBQ Cook-Off takes place Saturday, September 14, 2013.

“This will definitely give us a leg up on other contests in Illinois,” raved Greg Bane, co-founder and coordinator of the event.  “This designation will also encourage competitors to sign up faster so they can get into an officially sanctioned competition.”

This marks the fifth year of the Glen Ellyn Backyard BBQ Cook-Off, an event that originated as a small block party among Glen Ellyn neighbors.  Since its inception, the event has benefitted Bridge Communities, a grassroots transitional housing program for homeless families in DuPage County.  The event has quickly grown in volume and status and is now widely known as a signature event for Glen Ellyn.  In addition to the BBQ competition, the BBQ features headliner blues bands such as Glen Ellyn’s own Amy Kelly Band, as well as Cadillac Dave and other blues greats.  Great BBQ will be available to purchase from some of Chicago's top pitmasters. An extremely popular bags tournament engages event-goers of all ages.

Amy Van Polen, Bridge Communities’ Resource Development Director and member of the BBQ planning committee, stated, “We couldn’t be more excited about the Governor’s proclamation.  This will bring well-deserved attention to the hard work of this innovative band of BBQ enthusiasts who love their craft and love their community.”

Bridge Communities, Inc. is a dynamic, grassroots, nonprofit organization committed to transforming the lives of homeless families in DuPage County through partnering with talented, resourceful individuals and groups in the community.  Its program of transitional housing, mentoring and supportive services empowers families to increase life skills and earning power to promote self-sufficiency, sustain permanent housing, and to break the cycle of poverty within the family unit.  Started by co-founders Mark Milligan and Bob Wahlgren in 1988 to begin to help homeless families, Bridge has now become a powerful current of change in the lives of hundreds of extremely low to low income at-risk families.  To make a donation to support homeless families served by Bridge Communities, or to find out how to support Bridge in other ways, please call Amy Van Polen at (630) 545-0610, ext.12 or visit www.bridgecommunities.org.
