Local students learn impact of waste on community

Philadelphia, PA-May 17, 2013--Suburban Waste Services and Chichester Middle School teamed up to educate students on waste and its impact on the future.

The “waste audit” was held on Friday, May 10.  Suburban Waste Services employees talked through the history of waste, and then helped students sort through the barrels of waste they had collected through the school the day before.

“The students were very engaged,” said Christina Bizzari, President of Suburban.  “We were happy to see that they were not afraid to sort though the waste.  It was great seeing them get hands on.”

The “hands on” process came when all the waste collected in the school was then dumped onto tarps in the parking lot.  Areas for sorting were set up for trash, single stream, and organics.

“My students gained the perspective that as we move into the 21st century, many things will change, including the use of trash,”  said Science Teacher Vincent Duffy.  “They learned the valuable lesson of recycling and the economic impact it can have in local communities.”

Suburban Waste Services also challenged the students to practice the three R’s at home (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). “We will meet the students back in June where they can share their success stories,” said Bizzari.
