Burlesque Press Announces the First Biennial Hands On Literary Festival and Masquerade Ball

Burlesque Press
seeks to bring writers, readers, teachers and students together in an egalitarian format for the discussion of literature and writing. It will provide a supportive environment for writers and readers of all ages and levels to interact, share work, and discuss issues critical to creative writing, publication, creative pedagogy, and contemporary literature.  We also seek to provide a vibrant atmosphere for editors, agents, and other publishers to discover new talent.

This year’s festival will feature celebrated non-fiction writer Dinty W. Moore as the keynote speaker:


Dinty W. Moore is author of The Mindful Writer: Noble Truths of the Writing Life, as well as the memoir Between Panic & Desire, winner of the Grub Street Nonfiction Book Prize in 2009. He also edited The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing Flash Nonfiction: Advice and Essential Exercises from Respected Writers, Editors, and Teachers. Moore has published essays and stories in The Southern Review, The Georgia Review, Harpers, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine, Iron Horse Literary Review, and Crazyhorse, among numerous other venues. A professor of nonfiction writing at Ohio University, Moore has won many awards for his writing, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Fiction. He edits Brevity (http://brevitymag.com/), an online journal of flash nonfiction, and lives in Athens, Ohio, where he grows heirloom tomatoes and edible dandelions.

This year’s theme is Mask and Persona in Creative Writing and Literature. Papers are, however, invited on any aspect of creative writing and contemporary literature.

Creative Writing in the Composition Classroom
Analyses of Contemporary Literature
Contemporary Author Spotlights
Southern Literature Past, Present, and Future
YA, Fantasy, Crime Fiction, and Sci-Fi
Online and Traditional Publishing
The Current and/or Future State of Publishing
Individual or Group Readings of Creative Work

Students at all collegiate levels are invited and encouraged top submit proposals.
