Range Rover and Range Rover Sport Hybrids Unveiled at Frankfurt Auto Show

The Frankfurt Auto Show this September in Germany will be the first place that these two innovative new SUVs will be seen. While it is unlikely that these trucks will make it to North America quite yet, they do indicate that Land Rover will be putting some form of hybrid technology in showrooms in the United States very soon.

Land Rover engineer, Stuart Frith, let the info slip to the magazine Car Sales, that the first production Land Rover hybrids will be unveiled this fall. The new vehicles will sport a 3.0L V6 diesel engine paired with an electric motor and an eight speed automatic transmission.

He also said that there will be a turbocharged four-cylinder engine available in the new version of the Range Rover Sport. This engine is already available in the Land Rover LR2 and the Range Rover Evoque (http://www.landroverhoffman.com/2013-range-rover-evoque.htm). Land Rover is moving toward the smaller, lighter engine, because it has a great power-to-weight ratio, and produces plenty of muscle while burning less fuel to do it.

Another new edition of the Range Rover Sport will likely focus more on performance than on saving fuel. This will probably be called the R-S, and would slot above the current Range Rover Sport Supercharged. While this new vehicle may not offer much more power—the Supercharged Range Rover Sport already cranks out 510 hp—it should bring a sharper tuned suspension for crisper handling, a lower, sleeker profile, and bigger brakes. Land Rover would probably also try to trim even more weight.
