Round Scotland in 2020 Days: Returned Postal Delivery Baffles Hotelier

BLAIRGOWRIE, Scotland - May 15, 2013 - PRLog -- Murray Scott, managing director of The Angus Hotel in Blairgowrie received an “addressee gone away” response to a marketing mailer on 22nd April this year, but didn’t immediately recognise it as a recent campaign. Further inspection showed that the item was originally posted on 11th October 2007.

Commenting, he said:

“It’s fairly normal for a small proportion of mailers to be returned within a few weeks of a campaign being issued. People move house all the time and, understandably, they don’t always tell us when they have. But to receive something that has been in Royal Mail’s hands for the last six years is fairly incredible. It really makes you wonder what else might not have reached its intended recipient.”

The mailer had been destined for an address in Glasgow so, to make it there and back, it only had to travel a matter of 150 miles or a 180 minute round trip. Instead, the mailer has toiled its way across Scotland, completing its arduous 2020 day journey from Blairgowrie to Glasgow and back in a trifling 2,908,800 minutes since it left The Angus Hotel on 11th October 2007.

Perhaps most startling is the change in pricing over those six years.

Murray commented:

“According to the frank stamp on the mailer, second class postage in 2007 was coming in at a reasonable 22 pence – that’s now shot up to 50 pence per item – a rise of 127%. You would think for such a hike in service prices that we could rely on our mail getting returned to us in the event of non-delivery quicker than 2020 days! I’m pleased to note that our Autumn Breaks prices, however, have remained very competitive over that same period of time, only rising by around 9%.”
