EU Leaders Will Meet To Discuss Controversial Issues In Energy

May 14, 2013 - PRLog -- On March 14-15th a summit was held on a number of issues key to economic growth and competitiveness in the EU. One of these key topics was Energy, something the delegates decided to meet and discuss again at a summit on the 22nd May. A document prepared in advance of the summit states that the summit will confront issues such as high energy prices, something that many EU leaders see to be hampering European competitiveness.

The summit will invite leaders to discuss how Europe will remain competitive globally and bring down energy prices at a time when Europe is facing austerity cuts and investment shortfalls in energy infrastructure and generation capacity. The discussion will take place in two parts, discussing climate policies across the EU as well as Shale gas.

Firstly, when looking at climate policies across the EU, the commission will be requesting an analysis of energy prices in all member states by the end of 2014. This will allow them to highlight the EU’s competitiveness when compared to its global competition. The aim of this work will be to ensure a level playing field for business and industry across all EU member states.

The second main concern of the summit is Shale gas. This means that the commission will be assessing a systematic return to the use of more indigenous sources of energy, both conventional and unconventional. Unconventional energy refers to Shale gas, which is viewed with suspicion in the EU despite triggering an industrial revival in the US. Establishing an exchange of information between member states about energy such as this is also a key aim of the summit.

All of these factors will affect the UK business energy market in some form or another, and Indigo Swan is here to help businesses to navigate the often confusing waters of the energy industry.
