Announcing the Reissue of Mel Smilow’s Mid-Century Modern Furniture

Smilow Furniture, American Made, Handcrafted Solid Wood Seating Debuts at International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York City May 18-21, 2013

NEW YORK - May 13, 2013 - PRLog -- Mel Smilow (1922–2002) was an American furniture designer, manufacturer and retailer whose seating, case goods and lighting are widely regarded as among the very best of the mid 20th century. The works were entirely crafted by hand (in America) of solid walnut, birch and oak. Known for clean lines and impeccable proportions, they were sold under the name Smilow-Thielle and offered through namesake retail stores, from the late 1940s through the 1970s. Vintage pieces made their ways into private and public collections throughout the world and continue to be featured in mid-century modern auctions.

Now Mel’s daughter Judy, a designer, has sourced a 50-year old family-run factory in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in order to reissue a range of the designs from the original drawings. The initial re-introduction, a woven rush collection including a lounge chair, ottoman, dining chairs and bench, and pieces from the solid wood and loose cushion rail back collection, will debut this May at ICFF in the ReGeneration Furniture booth number #2039. In addition, during the show and after, there will be an expanded collection of Smilow Furniture, both vintage and new on view in the reGeneration store on Renwick Street. All furniture will be available to be ordered.

Appropriate for residential, hospitality, contract, institutional, and retail applications, Smilow Furniture is fully customizable and made to order. It will be available beginning this spring to consumers and design professionals through ReGenerationFurniture, and Smilow Design.

Judy Smilow / Smilow Design LLC
“My father’s designs worked on the balance of simplicity and complexity. He would combine the fine detail of intricate joinery on a simple shape. When I discovered  the trove of his furniture, drawings, photos, and sketches, his very consistent vision became clear. He also designed with the intent of creating timeless design that would endure, and we are pleased to follow his specs now with the same attention to detail, using sustainably sourced American hardwoods in these reissued pieces.”
