IRVINE, Calif. - May 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Irvine, CA—Yaz is the name of a birth control pill for women that is made, manufactured, and distributed by Bayer Pharmaceuticals.  Over the last decade, Bayer Pharmaceuticals has developed a reputation for being the pharmaceutical agency to go to when in need of any kind of remedy or medication; from pain killers for head ache relief, to the prevention of pregnancy in drugs like Yaz, Bayer Pharmaceuticals is a gigantic tycoon in the pharmaceutical drug and product world.  The problem is that Bayer has a growing reputation for negligence, with a handful of their very popular and widely used products ending up as disasters to patient health—as well as the company’s pocketbook.

None of their defective products has wielded such a heavy blow against the pharmaceutical giant, however, as Yaz—the contraceptive drug that once brought in billions of dollars for Bayer before women began approached the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) as well as attorneys at law in droves of thousands, reporting on the development of symptoms like blood clotting and DVT (deep vein thrombosis) after using Yaz.  The New York Times published an interesting and informative article that well summarized the ‘Yaz situation’, pointing to Bayer Pharmaceuticals ineptitude as the ultimate cause of the Yaz crisis.  And it is a crisis for Bayer, as Yaz was previously bringing in just under $2 billion for the company annually before the vast number of FDA adverse reports, in combo with negative research findings, began seriously tampering both Yaz’s image in the media, and that of its manufacturer.

As of now, the research has left little doubt that Yaz is dangerous to women because of the synthetic progestin hormone, drospirenone, which works as the active ingredient in Yaz.  The continuing problem is in how Bayer has fraudulently handled the advertising of the drug.  The NY Times articles makes this statement about the FDA’s attempted regulation of Bayer: “Last October, the agency sent Bayer a warning letter, citing the company for running two false and misleading television ads about Yaz. According to the letter, the ads overstated the drug’s efficacy, promoted it for conditions like premenstrual syndrome for which the drug is not approved, and minimized serious risks associated with the drug…the agency sent Bayer a warning letter about another problem — deviations from quality control standards at a manufacturing plant in Germany that makes drospirenone and other hormone ingredients used in Bayer’s birth control pills sold in the United States. The letter said that the way in which the facility calculated variability in ingredients did not meet American standards.”
