May 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Irvine, CA—Bayer Pharmaceuticals’ birth control pill, called Yaz, has been the center of a lot of controversy and medical studies in recent news, as the drug has been linked to patient heart attacks.  Researchers estimate that the crux of the alleged problem has to do with the hormone that mostly comprises the Yaz contraceptive pill, drospirenone.  One source comments on the dangerousness of this hormone: “In August of 2009, The British Medical Journal published two independent studies conducted in Denmark and The Netherlands. Both found that women taking drugs like Yaz…with the hormone drospirenone, had higher risks for blood clots.  The British Medical Journal published further Yaz research in October of 2011 with a study from the University of Copenhagen finding that drugs like Yaz could increase the risk of venous blood clots” (http://www.drugrisk.com/yaz/research).

The study in The British Medical journal, referenced above, is also discussed by another reputable source, which states: “Two studies published in the British Medical Journal in 2009 ‘raise alarms’ about the safety of the drugs, according to the Times. One 10-year study tracked blood clot rates in 15- to 49-year-old Danish women with no history of cardiovascular disease. The study found that women taking pills containing the progestins desogestrel, gestodone and drospirenone were at higher risk for blood clots than women taking pills containing levonorgestrel, one of the oldest synthetic progestins. A second study of more than 3,200 Dutch women found that…those taking drospirenone had a 6.3 times greater risk…” (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/186144.php).

From this information, it is clear that the research thus far conducted around Yaz has been conducted on the main active hormonal ingredient, which allegedly causes blood clotting that in turn prevents the blood from receiving the proper amount of oxygen.  As a consequence, DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) and heart problems, including heart attacks, may develop.  Thousands of women have sadly realized the above outlined risk increase, with 11,000 already filing lawsuits against the manufacturer, Bayer Pharmaceuticals.
