Members of the Point Arena Gateway to the California Coastal National Monument are hosting a retirement party for the CCNM Manager, Herrick (Rick) Hanks. The event will be held Thursday, May 16th from 2:30 to 4:30 in the Fog Signal Building at Point Arena Lighthouse. Members of the community who would like to personally honor Rick Hanks, for his service to the Bureau of Land Management, are invited to attend. Most recently, over the past 11 ½ years he has served as the first manager of the California Coastal National Monument, the 1,100 miles of rocks and islands off the California coast that were designated as a national monument in January, 2000, by President Clinton. Faced with the challenge of creating a management strategy for a national monument that extends the length of California, seen by millions but recognized by very few, he has developed and coordinated a wide variety of partners and stewards to participate in CCNM Gateways. Ranging from other federal agencies to non-profit organizations along the entire California coast, Hanks has brought together a unique partnership to protect California coastal resources. In the process, he has provided various organizations in small communities like ours in southern Mendocino County/ northern Sonoma County an opening for communication and collaboration. The community party, on May 16th, is an opportunity to thank Rick Hanks for his leadership in organizing and guiding our gateway groups and to wish him happiness and success in retirement. Light snacks and cake will be served. For more information contact: Leslie Dahlhoff, ldahlhof@mcn.org or Pamela Fitzgerald-Cerda, Pamela.palight@ End
