The 1812 Rose presented to Macdonell-Williamson House

Vankleek Hill Horticultural Society presents "The 1812 Rose" to Friends of Macdonell-Williamson House

CHUTE-A-BLONDEAU, Ontario - May 4, 2013 - PRLog -- The Friends of Macdonell-Williamson House (located in Chute-a-Blondeau, ON) were presented with a gift of "The 1812 Rose" on Saturday May 4th by Vankleek Hill Horticultural Society President, Mary Higginson.

Also known as Korcasima, it was chosen as the official rose by the Ontario Horticultural Association and grown to commemorate the war of 1812. It is a scented floribunda, with crimson-red flowers and multiple blooms. It's hardy and disease-resistant nature makes it a perfect addition to the lovely rose garden already at the heritage site, and is a welcome reminder of the sacrifices made by our forefathers, as well as a symbol of peace.

Macdonell-Williamson House is a Heritage Site along the Ottawa River and was built by fur trader John Macdonell for his Metis wife, Magdaleine Poitras and their family. The house is at an historic portage and was a supply and store at a strategic point where voyageurs needed to portage. Both John and Magdaleine had members of their family on both sides of the pemmican wars at a time when the supply of food was scarce, effectively ending the fur trade.

The Macdonell-Williamson House has exhibits and activities for the whole family, and is open Saturdays and Sundays in July and August only, between 12 noon and 5pm.
