May 3, 2013 - PRLog -- Lake Pointe Health Network (LPHN) (http://www.lakepointemedical.com/en-us/ourservices/medicalservices/pages/wound%20care%20center.aspx), based in Rowlett, Texas, recently nominated three staff members for the DFW Hospital Council Foundation’s (DFWHCF) Heartbeat of Healthcare awards. Nominees and winners were honored at the annual Employee of the Year Luncheon on Thursday, April 18. The luncheon celebrates the dedicated hospital employees in North Texas.

LPHN nominated Dr. Jake Abbot, trauma medical director, for the Physician of the Year award; Judy Smith, mammography technician, for the Employee of the Year award; and Ken Hibbeler, a volunteer in the emergency department (ED), for the Volunteer award.

“It was an honor to nominate three Lake Pointe team members for the Heartbeat of Healthcare awards,” said Brett Lee, LPHN’s chief executive officer. “Our hospital network is lucky to have so many leaders comprised of not only our medical staff and employees, but also our volunteers. We are always looking for ways to show our appreciation and recognize the numerous good works of our outstanding employee base and volunteers; these nominations were one way to share the accomplishments of our team members with the community.”

Dr. Jake Abbot is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and has been a member of LPHN’s medical staff for nearly two years. In addition to being LPHN’s first trauma medical director, he is the vice chair of the clinical operations committee. His dedication to the trauma department has assisted in the growth of the service, and he will play an integral part in LPHN’s move to a Level III Trauma Program. Furthermore, Dr. Abbot has a passion for helping others and has had the pleasure of traveling on missions to Peru and Guatemala to help those needing medical services.

Judy Smith, a mammography technician who has been a LPHN employee since the hospital’s establishment in 1987, is known for her exemplary patient care, understanding of mammography, support to breast cancer awareness and her great sense of teamwork. Throughout the past 26 years, Smith has helped LPHN stay current on the changes in her field, ensuring all technicians are up-to-date on training. She has been integral to ensuring LPHN is in total compliance with mammography regulations and has helped in obtaining various certifications for the Lake Pointe Breast Center. Additionally, Smith has played a key role in the establishment of four off-site mammography facilities for LPHN, ensuring consistency in the mammography program across the organization.

Ken Hibbeler began volunteering with LPHN after retiring as a pilot for a major airline carrier. During his interview with the volunteer coordinator, he expressed a specific interest to serve in the ED. Hibbeler’s love of working in the ED prompted him to attend EMT school at his own expense and on his own time so that he could become more familiar with the workings of the ED and the medical field in general. Hibbeler can be found training new volunteers who have a desire to also assist at an LPHN ED, and he has been recognized for his outstanding service to the LPHN family on numerous occasions.

Nominees were separated into four categories, including hospitals between 0-99 beds, hospitals between 100-250 beds, hospitals between 251-499 beds and hospitals with more than 500 beds. Two recipients were selected from each category and received trophies and cash awards. Additional honors included the Community Service Award, Physician Award, Hospital Corporate System Award and Volunteer Award. The Rex McRae Scholarship was also awarded to a local healthcare student.
