Point Loma Student Invited to Speak to Congress

Volunteers from the nonprofit, International Surf Lifesaving Association (ISLA) are going to Congress on May 15th, 2013 to discuss the need for water safety education curriculum and to present the Global Drowning Tracker©.

Point Loma Nazarene University student, William Koon, has been invited to a congressional committee in Washington D.C. on International Water Safety Day. William is an active member of the water safety community. He lifeguards in Huntington Beach with the California Department of Parks and Recreation, volunteers as the International Relations Manager of ISLA, where he coordinates global trips and lifeguards around the world. And he most recently won the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) John Hamed Student Scholarship 2013 for his work in the aquatic community.

Will and ISLA will have three to five minutes to alert Congress of the alarming drowning rates worldwide and to demonstrate how vital awareness is for drowning prevention. The goal of the briefing is to create awareness of International Water Safety Day and to share with congress the need for water safety education curriculum in schools, and how The Global Drowning Tracker© can help.

The Global Drowning Tracker© website reveals the drowning epidemic and provides people anywhere in the world access to view the rate of which drowning occurs, and provides them the ability to report a drowning through the Internet. The Global Drowning Tracker© is also equipped with SMS text messaging technology, which enables anyone with cell phone service to take action. International Water Safety Day organized the congressional briefing.
