Northwest Exterminating Co., Inc. offers property owners tips when dealing with a bee swarm

TUCSON, Ariz.------April 29, 2013-------

Warm weather has bees flying and is raising quite a concern with homeowners, especially in Arizona. Killer bees, or Africanized bees, are known to viciously attack people or animals that unintentionally stray into their territory. They are known to sting in greater numbers and are more easily provoked than the European honey bee. Even the simplest noise or vibration have been known to cause an attack with these bees.

If you are in the proximity of a known established colony, expect it to be a much more aggressive and irritable state.

Here are some common sense tips to help you avoid having to deal with an angry swarm:

a.     Have an escape plan in mind if a bee attack does occur.

b.     Do NOT try to remove bee hives without professional help. Call the experts.

c.     DO NOT panic every time you see a few bees. 7 out of 10 deaths are due to people panicking.

d.     Check around your home regularly for bee colonies. Check storage, sheds, meter boxes, trees, shrubs and crevices.

Sometimes though, even when following all the tips above, a bee attack can still occur, so this is what you need to do:

a. If you are being chased, run away in a straight line and find immediate shelter. Africanized bees are slow fliers and most people can out run them. DO NOT jump into the pool. The bees will wait until you surface for air to attack.

b. If you are attacked, DO NOT play dead or swat at the bees.

c. Bees attack where carbon dioxide is expelled. So protect your face to prevent stings to the eyes, nose and in the mouth.

e.     Avoid other people, or they will also be attacked.

f.      Once stung, you are marked as a target. Bee stings are delivered with a pheromone which labels you as a threat and invites other bees to sting.

g.     Never dive underwater. The swarm will wait for your surface.

h.     Seek medical attention immediately in case of anaphylactic shock. Symptoms can occur within seconds and may include difficult breathing, swallowing, itching, wheezing, anxiety or fainting
