ANCHORAGE, Alaska - April 25, 2013 - PRLog -- A gap analysis is an internal audit conducted by airlines and airport to identify shortcomings against a recognized industry-specific model. Besides identifying gaps in an airline or airport SMS program, the gap analysis is a great training tool. Managers can learn quickly what is required of a formal aviation safety management system by reviewing the questions in one of the better gap analysis models, such as Transport Canada and ICAO gap analysis models. SMS Pro also has an excellent gap analysis model provided by SCSI (Southern California Safety Institute).

For over five years, SMS Pro's Gap Analysis module offered several models to choose from, including:
• FAA Simple;
• ICAO ;
• Transport Canada;
• Hybrid (combination of all above); and
• IS-BAO.

See http://www.asms-pro.com/Modules/SafetyAssurance/GapAnalysis.aspx

Furthermore, managers could customize their Gap Analysis which was based on one of the above templates.

The detailed FAA Gap Analysis was purposely omitted because it seemed to change frequently.

The FAA detailed gap analysis model was added to the popular Web based aviation safety management software this week.

Next week, SMS Pro will include the latest ICAO Gap Analysis from document 9859, 3rd Edition.

SMS Pro Gap Analysis module comes with reports and charts that demonstrate continuous improvement.

A gap analysis helps operators uncover shortfalls in some process or characteristic. The gap analysis is performed against a template or model, such as SMS Pro's models adapted from various SMS guidance documents published in Canada, The United Kingdom and The United States.
At the gap analysis core are two questions:
Where are we?
Where do we want to be?

SMS gap analyses are often used to discover where to focus efforts on improvement. They compare characteristics of an organization's operations against an appropriate model. Gap analyses highlight areas where requirements of the model are not fully realized and details necessary changes.
