Virtual Middle School Sends Social Media Message Loud and Clear

April 22, 2013 - PRLog -- On April 23rd, 98 middle school students from North and South America will attempt to use social media to spread a message to every country in the world within 24 hours. These students from virtual school Williamsburg Intermediate have never even met each other, but are working together to make the internet a happier place with their Wave to the World: Stand Up, Stay True, Stand Out campaign.

13-year-old student Kaleigh Smith says, “Stand Up, Stay True, Stand Out is about trying to prove to people that it is ok to express your opinions. It’s all about having your personality shine out.” In the midst of hateful forums and bullying online, Wave to the World is a reminder to be kind-hearted behind the computer screen. Director Erin Mwanje says, “This project sends a powerful message around the world that people care, that youth want a bright future and are working towards that.”

Besides sending a feel good message across the internet, Wave to the World proves that online schooling can give students an edge in several aspects of their education.  Students cited activists Asmaa Mahfouz, Chen Guancheng and Malala Yousafzai as inspiration for their Stand Up, Stay True, Stand Out message. Williamsburg Intermediate is teaching the next generation to genuinely care about social issues, and giving them full access to the technology to make their opinions heard across the globe. “Our message is important,” says Emma Weaver, age 11.  “Because it is you who has an effect on the world, it starts with you!”

The students plan to use social media outlets, such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Pinterest and Google + along with chain emails to reach their goal. Visit www.wavetotheworld.org to track the wave and learn how to help spread the positive message.
