YUMA, Ariz. - April 22, 2013 - PRLog -- Recently, Larry Curtis, Executive Director of the Institute for Safety and Health Management (ISHM), was asked to comment about the organization’s history and how the Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) certification differs from other that are currently available to safety professionals.

When asked about the ISHM’s history, Mr. Curtis shared the following: In the late 1960s, a group of respected safety professionals founded the Safety Management Association.  It was formed to promote the advancement of the safety function through application of management principles. Its purpose then, as it is today, was to provide a medium of communication to encourage the development of information and the application of techniques to advance the degree of professionalism in safety management. It provided a favorable environment to encourage the contribution of all academic and managerial disciplines for the purpose of promoting safety as a truly integrated management function.

Moving ahead to the late 1990s, the group’s name changed to the National Safety Management Society and the Certified Safety and Health Manager certification was established.  Since an organization must keep training and certification functions at arm’s length, the Institute for Safety and Health Management was founded in 2003 to administer the CSHM certification.

Mr. Curtis was then asked how the Certified Safety and Health Manager certification differs from others that are currently available, he responded: A person’s certification should reflect the jobs and functions they perform. The certification validates that the holder has demonstrated knowledge and skills in their field.

The CSHM is the only accredited certification available that focuses entirely on the safety management process. Holders of this certification have passed a rigorous exam that measures their knowledge in four distinct areas, General and Business Management; Management Methods and Systems; Safety, Health, and Environment Applications; and Risk Identification, Management and Control.  Holders of this certification have certainly demonstrated their knowledge and abilities in the EHS management field.
