Taking on today's tools of the trade

OURIMBAH, Australia - April 21, 2013 - PRLog -- According to a recent survey of more than 500 Australian tradies, commissioned by tradesman supply retailer Totally Workwear, a new generation of tradesmen who rely on mobile devices and smart phone skills to reduce costs, save time, stress less and spend more time are emerging in today’s trade industry.

The survey reports that half take laptops onsite with them, while more than 40 per cent rely on smart-phones and tablet devices such as an iPad to get their job done.

Local tradie and tutor for Central Coast Community College’s new Tech-know Tradies course, Steven Fonti, said sound technological skills are now a valuable part of the modern tradies’ job.  

“I personally use my tablet to invoice, quote, manage jobs and order supplies.

“It means I can get my job done while onsite effectively and efficiently, and gives me more time to spend with my family when I get home from work,” said Mr Fonti.  

College IT Manager, Peter Sinclair said the Tech-know-Tradies courses have been developed to meet the needs of a large segment of the Coast’s local labour market.

“Around 15.9% of the local labour force work as technicians and trades workers, and a further 12.6% are employed as labourers. That’s a big part of our community.

“We’ve designed our Tech-Know Tradies courses to help tradies stay at the top of their game as their industry embraces technology.

“Students can learn how to calculate estimates, send quotes, order materials and communicate online, as well as using their smart phone or tablet on the job to streamline their workload,” said Mr Sinclair.

The courses commence in May.
