1. Thinking of doing it yourself? Don’t.

Unless you’re an experienced photographer, it’s highly unlikely you’ll bring out the best of your product if you take your own photos. 2. Lights, camera, angles.

No matter how mundane or pedestrian you think your product is there’s sure to be a way to sex it up. Circuit boards? Cupcakes? Toilet seats? All can produce exciting, vibrant images in the hands of a skilled commercial photographer. They’ll offer a good eye for detail, creative use of angles, the right lighting and extensive knowledge of what works – and what doesn’t.

3. Editing isn’t cheating.

Don’t be fooled – you can’t turn muck into gold. But you can use photo-editing techniques to turn a great image into an outstanding one. But, as with every aspect of commercial photography, you must be careful. An overly-edited mess won’t appeal to anyone – and could even make it look like you have something to hide. But there’s no shame in touching up and employing appropriate visual effects to ensure your product really shines.
