San Antonio Podiatrist Discusses How to Banish the Bunion

Bunion pain can be effectively treated via modern techniques.

SAN ANTONIO - April 15, 2013 - PRLog -- San Antonio Podiatrist, Dr. Ed Davis, has been performing bunion surgery for over 28 years.  He states that techniques have evolved over the almost 3 decades of practice.

The American Podiatric Medical Association of which Davis is a member recently launched a public information campaign about bunions: http://www.apma.org/Learn/content.cfm?ItemNumber=6414

Dr. Davis states that there are over 30 different procedures to treat painful bunions as not all bunions are the same. "Podiatric physicians are uniquely qualified to treat this condition as they have been trained to recognize which procedures potential work best for a patient's specific condition.

The pain from a bunion can come from 3 different sources according to Davis.

1)There is the "bump" which is the enlargement seen on the big toe joint. Often, wider shoegear can alleviate "bump" pain.

2) The big toe may be deviated, that is, angled over toward the little toes, perhaps overlapping or crowding the smaller toes. The big toe is stronger than the little toes and such crowding can cause the little toes to contract or form hammertoes.

3) There may be arthritis which forms within the big toe joint causing pain or restricted range of motion. That is also known as hallux rigidus.   Longstanding misalignment of the big toe joint may cause abnormal wear and tear on the big toe joint.

Dr. Davis cautions patients to avoid those offering a quick fix or the marketing of one specific procedure to alleviate bunion pain.
