UNC Wilmington social work student named NASW-NC 2013 Toby Brown Award Recipient

The National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter has recognized BSW student Dana Cronkhite as the 2013 Toby Brown Award recipient.

April 15, 2013 - PRLog -- RALEIGH, NC – University of North Carolina at Wilmington student Dana Cronkhite has been awarded the 2013 Toby Brown Award from the National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter (NASW-NC).

The award recognizes the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) student of North Carolina who best reflects and represents the ethics, values, and passion in the field of social work through exemplary performance in social work coursework, field placement, student social work associations, and community organizations.

This award program was established in memory of and to honor Dr. James S. “Toby” Brown who died in 1995. He was an Assistant Professor of Social Work at North Carolina State University and was a highly recognized educator and practitioner.

Dana Cronkhite will graduate with a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in May 2013.  Dana is a student at the Onslow Extension site in Jacksonville, North Carolina and has been working with students and faculty to form a Student Social Work Organization on the Onslow Extension site. Dana serves as president of the group and demonstrates a high level of commitment to the Onslow community by engaging in several activities ranging from beach clean-up to volunteering at the Onslow County Homeless Veteran Stand-Down in order to serve Onslow County.

In addition to various extra-curricular activities, Dana is completing her social work internship at the Virginia Dare Mental Health Clinic serving active duty marines and sailors at Camp Lejeune, where she has developed an understanding of the unique issues our service men and women face.  

In order to advance her career and continue to provide therapeutic services to this population, Dana plans to obtain her Master of Social Work and eventually become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
