Fresh off the heels of a sold out 2013 season opener, this dynamic and versatile company gets set to take local audiences on a choreographic and rhythmic journey to Spain and Latin America with the next show in this series, on April 19th at 8:30 PM.

QUEENS, N.Y. - April 12, 2013 - PRLog -- May flowers aren’t the only great things that the month of April brings.  On Friday, April 19th at 8:30 pm, American Bolero Dance Company will present the second installment in its 2013 Spring Season of Tablao Flamenco.  Taking place just outside of Manhattan, at The Chian Federation in Astoria, this ongoing series of once-a-month shows highlights the rich variety of Spanish dance and music in a cabaret-like format and atmosphere that emulates the flamenco clubs (or 'tablaos') in Spain.  Guests will be treated to spectacular performances of Andalusian Flamenco, Clásico Español, and Salsa by some of the finest local and international talent around.

This performance is part of the 10th Annual   Immigrant Heritage Week, a citywide celebration that honors the experiences and contributions of the millions of immigrants who have shaped New York City for generations.  Since its premiere in November 2008, the Tablao Flamenco series has proudly showcased the extraordinary talents of numerous New York City-based immigrant artists, starting with American Bolero Dance Company’s Peruvian-born Artistic Director and Founder, Gabriela Granados.  Ms. Granados founded the Company in 1996 with the mission to present and preserve Spanish dance and music in their diverse forms. Armed with this mission, her extensive training in Classical and Regional Spanish dances, Escuela Bolera, and Flamenco, and her years of experience performing in three of Madrid’s most legendary tablaos flamencos: Los Canasteros, Zambra and Las Brujas, she established the Tablao Flamenco series in Astoria, creating something truly unique in the Queens area.  Ms. Granados has performed internationally, touring American Bolero Dance Company’s signature productions in New York City, the Mid-Atlantic States and Europe to critical acclaim.  The New York Times has called Ms. Granados’ programs “exuberant and stylish” and her solo work “stunning…a tour de force”.

Appearing with Ms. Granados will be featured dancer La Conja, and visiting guest singer Félix de Lola from San Francisco.  La Conja is a commanding performer, described by The New York Daily News “as a mesmerizing singer and demon dancer”. Considered one of Flamenco World’s most versatile artists she has with worked with everyone from José Greco to Savion Glover.  Drawing inspiration from her Egyptian, Turkish and American background, her work incorporates in Arab, Spanish and Indian musical influences, along with Flamenco music and dance, creating a uniquely modern performance.  Born in Sevilla, Spain, flamenco singer Félix de Lola’s early training began with The Campallo family, followed by classes with such prestigious singers as Jesus Heredia and Naranjito de Triana.  Mr. de Lola has appeared in some of Sevilla’s renowned tablaos and theaters, such as “El Arenal”, “Las Brujas”, “Sol Café Cantante” and Peñas Andaluzas, and worked with noted artists Manolo Marin, Pastora Galván, Chuscales, Antonio Granjero, and more.  In addition to his singing talent, he is a composer and lyricist, and also writes theatrical works for the Flamenco stage.

Rounding out the evening’s cast are Tablao Flamenco first-timers Barbara Martinez, a singer with an eclectic repertoire of Flamenco, Latin and jazz who also dances in various venues around New York City, and salsa dancers Karla Choko, whose training included studying at Alvin Ailey Dance School, Broadway Dance Center, and with famed salsa dance instructor, Eddie Torres, and Franklin Liranzo, a former member of Mambo Bravo Dancers, who is the current founder of the well-recognized team, "Los Divos".  They join series regulars, singer/dancer Aurora Reyes and guitarist Basilio Georges, a team whose trademark style blends Flamenco and Latino rhythms and movements, and Raphael Brunn, a Flamenco guitarist who made his public debut at the opening festivities of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, and who currently performs as both a freelance artist and with his own Flamenco Quintet.

All performances in the 2013 Spring Season of “Tablao Flamenco” are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.  This program is also made possible (in part) by the Queens Council on the Arts, with public funding from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, and with support from The JP Morgan Chase Foundation.
