WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - April 12, 2013 - PRLog -- Westlake Village, California—On March 23, 2013, the Project Unify Club at Oaks Christian School hosted the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament in the Dallas Gym.  Five Special Olympics basketball teams from the Ventura County Special Olympics organization scrimmaged with OCS students, some of whom play for the boys and girls junior varsity and varsity basketball teams.  More than 75 OCS students came to participate, volunteer, and cheer for these special athletes, making this event a truly special event with memories to last a lifetime.

OCS Project Unify Club President Brandon Coll organized his fellow club members and worked with local media and the Ventura County Special Olympics organization to get support and to raise money for Special Olympics events.  The March 23 OCS-hosted basketball tournament began with the announcement of a Special Olympics donation from the Project Unify Club and the Crocker Family.  “As this year’s Project Unify Club president, I wanted to start a new tradition and hold fundraising events to help support the Special Olympics athletes,” said freshman Brandon Coll. “On behalf of the club, I was very pleased to present $1,497 to Regional Sports Manager Jan Radnoti of the Ventura County Special Olympics.”  These funds were raised from much hard work holding bake sales and generous matching gifts from club members Lauren and Robbie Crocker and their parents.

“The basketball event and scrimmages were a celebration of the Special Olympics athletes who thrilled the audience and OCS students with a spirited and competitive demonstration of athleticism, camaraderie, teamwork, and basketball skills,” continued Brandon.  “It was heartwarming for me to see the Special Olympics athletes having so much fun on the basketball court as they heard the cheering from the crowd.  It was also especially nice to experience the interaction between the Special Olympics athletes and the OCS students--both on and off the court they shared friendship, kindness, and affection with each other.”

This was definitely a team effort of the OCS Project Unify Club.  Faculty Advisor Dan Smith helped to oversee the club’s activities while Brandon Coll led the charge.  Club member MariaInes Echeverria sang the National Anthem to begin the tournament.  Club photographer Marisa Asadurian had camera in hand to document the event.  Lauren and Robbie Crocker, Eddie Sotelo, and MariaInes Echeverria generously provided for the bake sales.  David Serge gave his time organizing the OCS basketball players for the scrimmages.  Many more OCS students attended and participated, making this annual OCS event one of the most successful yet in touching the lives of Special Olympics athletes.
