The Lockheed Martin weapon recently demonstrated its capabilities by disabling a drone mid-flight.

The laser is meant to target small armored boats from Iran that reportedly harass U.S. Navy ships in the Persian Gulf and drones.

The unit costs around $32 million to produce but only costs $1 to fire.

The laser prototype will be mounted to the fantail of the USS Ponce and sent to the 5th fleet region in the Middle East for real-world experience.

The Navy said the new weapon is 100 percent in testing in terms of destroying its target.
