The Printworks a Piece of Manchester History

Mancunians today know The Printworks as a iconic centre of entertainment in Manchester however the building was once a centre of commerce as a prolific printing house dubbed ‘The Fleet Street of the North’.

MANCHESTER, U.K. - April 11, 2013 - PRLog -- Manchester Tours have just announced they are planning historical guided tours of the Printworks exploring the history that lies beneath this behemoth of a building and comparing what is was then to how it is now.  Offering exclusive access to behind the scenes information, historic archived photos and memorabilia including some of the original newspapers printed here.

The Printworks building has had a rich history within the newspaper industry and was the most prolific printing house in Europe. The building went from being owned by Kemsley Newspapers Ltd, who printed publications such as the Sunday Times in Manchester to its final incarnation in 1956 as Maxwell House, named after infamous newspaper tycoon and owner Robert Maxwell, before the business closed as a printing house in 1985 after the pension scandal.   After the Manchester bomb the Printworks building was renovated as part of the Exchange Square redevelopment and the entertainment venue as we know it launched in November 2000.

Back in the day many newspapers were actually printed in the building, newspapers such as The Sunday Times, The Daily Mail, Manchester Evening Chronicle, Daily Mirror and many more. Walking through The Printworks today there are still some gems from the past if you know what to look for, as they are well hidden to the untrained eye.

To this day the employees of the former printing house still meet up frequently through a charitable collective called “The Withy Grove Fellowship” to ensure the legacy of the building in its heyday never dies and this group is supported by The Printworks who provide them with meeting space and support.

Join Manchester tours on Wednesday the 17th at 11 a.m. for a tour of the iconic Printworks building and its rich history. The tour starts outside Café Rouge and continues through the complex, there will also be a stop at the iconic Hard Rock Cafe and a tour of the Odeon cinema, the largest Printworks tenant, with a viewing of the largest IMAX screen outside of London and the brand new refurbished VIP Gallery space.
