Pearl & Coutts: Spring Fair International Reflects ‘Upbeat’ UK Shops Mood

April 10, 2013 - PRLog -- This year’s Spring Fair International show has just been welcomed as a resounding success by the national retail industry. Europe’s most prestigious retail products trade fair was held in early February  at the Birmingham NEC, generating over £2 billion worth of business. Over 68,000 keen buyers attended, viewing some 30,000 new product launches, existing products and placing orders for retail businesses across the UK and abroad.

Despite many gloomy media predictions for British retail during the last year, the show actually saw a year-on-year increase in footfall of 6%. Some 5,000 visitors represented international businesses, with the remainder drawn from UK retailers. Buyers for many major high street chains were among their number. The show has steadily gained a solid reputation as the leading event for both giftware and other product launches and for showcasing new trends. Visitors are typically retail purchase decision makers looking to place orders for products directly destined for sale within their outlets.  Alongside the products themselves the show also hosted an exclusive programme of lectures, seminars and full scale catwalk shows from top designers and household names from the industry. The show’s eight seminar theatres were consistently well attended, in addition to full audiences at demonstration areas and the catwalk shows.

There was also more positive news for shops across the country. Each year the show produces its own survey of retailer sentiment in the form of a comprehensive survey of those attending. The results of this year’s ‘Spring Fair Retail Barometer’ survey demonstrated a return of confidence among UK attendees. Some 83% of industry respondents stated they were forecasting both growth during this year and an improvement in consumer confidence.
