The St George, Staten Island festival promotes communal pride, cooperative problem solving and sharing resources as foundations of a strong and sustainable neighborhood. The celebrations include a giant puppet show that re-envisions the mythical story of St George and the dragon into one in which the protagonists resolve their conflict through mutual understanding and learning to share the natural resources in order to live peacefully together and Dragon parade where kids can dress up as dragons or flower fairies who give out seed cards to onlookers. There will be all day live local music and dance performances including Tribe Hamsa Belly Dancers and Karyn's Angels. All around the closed off NYC street there will be Arts and Crafts Exhibits, Sales and Workshops led by professional local artists. The Earth Day events include workshops and activities on composting, healthy cooking, herb growing, plant and animal identification, tree stewardship, recycling and more! Kids of all ages can participate with the Xiaolin Martial Arts' Dragon Dance Troupe as they take over the streets with colorful costumes and puppets. A Kids crafts area with projects led by local artists, and environmental games including a recycling relay race in which kids pick up trash, run and put it in the appropriate receptacle. The festival is created by a grassroots team of committed volunteers from CATPAW, the Community Association of Tompkinsville Park Promoting Arts and Whimsy, GrowNYC, the NY Department of Parks and Recreation, the New York Compost Project on Staten Island, Open Art Surgery, Deep Tanks Studio, Make SI, Westerleigh Folk Festival and the Every Thing Goes Stores.
