Buyers and providers must move away from ‘fast food logistics’ as part of a new era of smarter growth for the automotive industry in China. Services which satisfy immediate demand but leave the customer with an appetite for something better are not the future, say industry executives.

The particular expression ‘fast food logistics’ comes from Wu Jun, general manager of Fengshen Logistics, a major provider to Dongfeng Motor. But it is echoed from both sides of the industry – from car companies and their principal tier suppliers, and by significant logistics service providers.

“We rely on a lot of manual labour which yields poor quality data,” says Helen Tu, China and ASEAN logistics manager for tier one supplier Delphi, when commenting on managing her transport providers. “In order to improve our visibility we are working…to develop one integrated system that will improve our supply chain.”

After a decade of powerful expansion, smarter logistics is on top of the agenda for this year’s summit of executives from across the industry. They will meet, together with senior government officials, at the annual Automotive Logistics China conference, to be held in Shanghai on 15-17 April on the eve of the Auto Show.

The conference is in its 10th year and is the most influential gathering of industry executives responsible for logistics – the delivery of components which make up the almost 20 million cars and commercial vehicles produced in China each year, and the transport of those vehicles to customers.

The conference also includes the executives who handle the flow of imports of foreign cars, as well as China’s increasing exports of finished vehicles.

Improvements needed include the development of significant third party providers (so-called 3PLs), the use of milk runs, consolidation points to ensure full truckloads, better planning tools and one-stop services. The conference is the place where these and other initiatives are discussed and planned.

“This conference is great, it provides the opportunities for government, service providers and OEMs to discuss common issues so that healthy automotive logistics can be achieved,” said Richard Li, vehicle distribution manager for Ford China, who attended last year’s event. “The grand meeting of automotive suppliers,” added Li Wu of local carmaker Lifan Group.

Recognising the significance of Tier 1 suppliers in driving towards more effective logistics, this year’s meeting will feature speakers including Zhu Rui, director of materials, purchasing and logistics for Lear China, Renato Manalac, senior operations manager for Visteon Asia Pacific, Lucy Yang, purchasing director for Magna Seating China, and Wenty Zhuo, Asia Pacific purchasing director for Magneti Marelli.

Also registered to attend the 2013 conference are executives and managers from a range of international destinations, including other powerhouses of automotive production like the USA and Germany, as well as countries like Brazil and Russia, which face their own challenges of a fast-growing domestic market with imperfect logistics.

Automotive Logistics China has simultaneous translation between English and Mandarin, and the 2-day delegate fee includes lunches, the mid-conference gala dinner, the introductory cocktail reception and copies of the presentations to download after the event.

The conference is organised in association with the China Automotive Logistics Association, a part of the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing (CFLP), which will be hosting a special one-day event on the import and export of finished vehicles as a part of the conference. Delegates to the conference have free admission to this event.

There are special delegate rates for China-based attendees, with additional discounts for members of the China Automotive Logistics Association of CFLP.

Automotive Logistics China is supported by Gold sponsors FedEx, DB Schenker and DHL, by Global sponsor Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, and by Silver sponsors BLG Logistics, Goodpack, Inform, Orbis, Union Pacific and UTi.

The conference is one of a series organised around the world by Automotive Logistics magazine, the leading global publication in the field. The series includes similar events in Europe, Russia, North America, South America and India.
