NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - April 7, 2013 - PRLog -- New Brunswick, NJ – The American Conference on Diversity 65th Anniversary State Humanitarian Dinner, held at the luxurious Pleasantdale Château in West Orange, N.J., April 4, drew 200 of the state’s corporate and community leaders to a spectacular evening of fine dining, live jazz entertainment, and diversity recognition.

“Tonight you are celebrating an organization that makes a difference through diversity awareness,” said PNC Wealth Management Director, NNJ Region, and Board of Trustees Chair Theresa de León. “Our state is one of the most diverse in the nation with a population of 8 million. As we celebrate our 65th anniversary, it’s exciting for us to evolve to meet the needs of our changing communities.”

This premier recognition gala, which began in 1955, allowed attendees an opportunity to network and honor their peers. Moreover, it helped raise funds to support our youth leadership-development programs through a silent auction of luxury items and a “Lead for Diversity” (LFD) text-to-give opportunity. Each year, our LFD initiative impacts an estimated 20,000 New Jersey students. (For more information about our LFD program, visit http://americanconferenceondiversity.org/youth-collegiate-services or email Pam@AmericanConferenceOnDiversity.org.)

“One of the things we’re most proud of is that we’ve had a positive impact on schools through this program that started years ago in response to the desegregation of schools,” said Patricia Rossman, chief diversity officer and HR communications at BASF and a member of our board of trustees.

To mark the organization’s 65 years of valuing diversity, educating leaders, and promoting respect, “Defining Moments of Diversity” video debuted. This collection of heart-felt personal diversity stories submitted shot on location during our yearlong anniversary celebration events motivated attendees to pay our mission forward—just as the evening’s award recipients have done.

“The individuals and organization we are honoring tonight embody the mission of our organization,” said American Conference on Diversity President and CEO Elizabeth Williams-Riley, a prolific orator who inspired the audience with her words, wit, and wisdom.

The 2013 honorees, including the recipient of our new Workplace Transformation Award, are:

Corporate Humanitarian Award - NASCO, Inc. This integrated claims processor for BlueCross and BlueShield Plans across the country, including American Conference on Diversity’s longtime supporter Horizon BCBS of NJ, was recognized for demonstrating a sustained commitment to closing the healthcare disparities gap by bridging the payer gap. Not only has NASCO assembled and supported a diverse workforce for more than 25 years, but the Atlanta-based company has helped support the American Conference on Diversity’s vision for nearly a decade. “It’s impossible to be a great leader if you don’t understand diversity,” said NASCO Vice President of Client Delivery Alan L. Bunn, who accepted the award.

Humanitarian Award - John W. Greene, CLU®, ChFC®, Retired Senior Vice President, Prudential Financial. Prior to his retirement from Prudential in 2012, Greene was responsible for the company’s national career distribution system for insurance and investment. Agency Distribution, which represents more than 50 sales agencies across the country, was recognized for the implementation of a robust training program on diversity and inclusion over the course of five years that reached approximately 200 representatives in the field.

“We thought it appropriate to introduce this new workplace transformation award on our anniversary because it takes time to transform workplaces, communities, and schools—and we’re all about transformational work!” said Williams-Riley. “We plant seeds, but it’s up to individuals to water those seeds and let them grow.”

The following individuals accepted the Workplace Transformation Award:

Caroline Feeney, CLU® ChFC®, President, Agency Distribution, The Prudential Insurance Company of America.
