A joint exhibit by visual artists ROSLYN LEVIN and KELLIANNE LAND -- Friday May 10th, 6pm. Origo Books Gallery, Downtown Toronto.

TORONTO - April 5, 2013 - PRLog -- Origo Books Gallery is proud to showcase a selection of paintings by visual artists ROSLYN LEVIN and KELLIANNE LAND.

"The feather flew, not because of anything in itself but because the air bore it along. Thus am I, a feather on the breath of God." —Hildegard of Bingen

For experienced sumi-e painter ROSLYN, “Body, Breath and Brush are One with each stroke as I move and breathe with the brush. I move at different speeds with varied pressures and that creates texture. I reach within to share my Spirit with the image on the paper. Thus, with sensitive brushwork, a bird in the air is true flight; a cat running, pure speed; the slight angling of the head of a crane, sorrow or love... And I get one chance only. I cannot mask an error or redo a brushstroke. I must begin the painting again and again until I achieve a piece that looks as though I 'breathed' it onto the paper... The simplicity of sumi-e is deceptive. The key is simplicity, elegance, beauty, and serenity.”

ROSLYN has been twice-honoured with The Ruth Yamada Award for Excellence in Sumi-e, by Sumi-e Artists of Canada. In 2009 she was recognized for “an innovative and personal approach” from the Canadian and American sumi-e societies, and at the 2010 Shodo Canada Competition, five Japanese master calligraphers applauded ROSLYN's work “for its energy, quality of line and composition.”

Struggling for most of her life between a beautiful, imaginative rebellion and the nuts, bolts and bandaids of responsibility, KELLIANNE is a prolific and multifaceted artist whose current body of work carries two distinct natures... one that is devotional and abstract, with textures, geometry and numbers interplaying with personal allegories; and another that is impressionist and experiential, a response to nature.

In KELLIANNE's words, “Spirit has its voice through my painting, almost to the point were it isn't mine anymore. Only the viewer knows the measure of my fruition.” Eccumenical work and spiritual devotion revealed the path she had lost for more than twenty five years and life experiences have enriched this revelation.

For almost 40 years, ROSLYN LEVIN SCA has been exploring Japanese brushstroke painting (sumi-e). Elected into the Society of Canadian Artists in 2012, she has also been studying Japanese calligraphy (shodo). ROSLYN's art has been juried into both national and international shows, earning several awards in North America, Europe, Japan and China; and is present in City of Ottawa's and Perth General Hospital's corporate collections. KELLIANNE LAND spent the early part of her creative life exploring art while observing her parents' growing artistic careers. After attending Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, mothering, illustrating, rebelling, becoming a civil draftsperson, studying art history at Concordia University, being a graphic designer, and for a long time a muralist and decorative artist... KELLIANNE is again exploring painting.
