OCEANPORT, N.J. - April 5, 2013 - PRLog -- Runners, joggers and walkers across the Garden State and beyond are counting down the final 30 days until The New Jersey Marathon. The state's premiere road race gets underway on May 5 at the Jersey Shore.  With the theme “Up & Running,” the event, which annually attracts thousands of competitors, volunteers and supporters, has taken on additional, poignant meaning to those still affected by the damage inflicted on the region by Superstorm Sandy in October.

The New Jersey Marathon is set to run through eight New Jersey towns, beginning at Monmouth Park in Oceanport and continuing through Monmouth Beach, Deal, Allenhurst, Lock Arbour, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove and Long Branch.  A full weekend of activities for the whole family is scheduled for May 3-5, including the Novo Nordisk Health & Fitness Expo, Barnabas Health Family Festival and Kids Races, full marathon, half-marathon and half-marathon relay.

“The last month before The New Jersey Marathon is an exciting time for everyone involved with the race,” said Race Director Joe Gigas.  “Preparations for all of the events are getting into high gear, and folks are making their plans to take part in one of the big highlights of the year.  Now is a great time to register for the races or to join the volunteer team.”

The “Up & Running” theme parallels a series of initiatives termed “Restore the Shore,” which US Road Sports and The New Jersey Marathon have implemented to help the region's recovery efforts from the lasting effects of Hurricane Sandy.

Registration for all events, course views (when finalized), information about volunteering, sponsorship and details of the entire weekend of activities are available at the race Website at www.NJMarathon.org and the event Facebook page at www.facebook.com/NJMarathon.  Runners and fans are encouraged to follow The New Jersey Marathon on its Twitter @NJMarathon.

All athletes who meet the minimum time requirements are invited to participate.  Those looking for less competitive racing can take part in the Barnabas Family Festival and Kids Run.  The New Jersey Marathon also conducts a series of training runs and related events to help participants of all levels to prepare.  The last long training run is scheduled for April 14, beginning at Sneaker Factory Long Branch.

The New Jersey Marathon is owned by US Road Sports & Entertainment Group, which conducts road races nationwide.

Official sponsors of The New Jersey Marathon include Novo Nordisk, Barnabas Health and Investors Bank.
