Philadelphia NAACP ACT-SO Competition 2013: Youth Academic Programs

Local poet to help judge Philadelphia NAACP branch office contest for young people of African American descendant
UPPER DARBY, Pa. - April 2, 2013 - PRLog -- On April 13th Saturday hundred's of young people from the Delaware Valley will gather at the Universal Audenried High School on 3301 Tasker Street in Philadelphia to compete for awards under several categories: Earth Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, Photography, Dance, Poetry and many others.

Mel Brake, Executive Director of MPW Foundation, will judge the poetry category with several other judges. He participated in the competitions last year as a judge, and discovered that Philadelphia has an untapped reservoir of talented young people. The passions and commitment for the arts of the youth that he met last year was so impressive that he agreed to join Veronica Norris (Philadelphia NAACP ACT-SO Committee) and Kay Coleman-Smith (Chairperson Philadelphia NAACP ACT-SO) this year.

ACT-SO is designed for high school students in grades 9 through 12 (up to 19 years of age), of African-American descent. Students must be a citizen of the United States and an amateur in their category of competition.

Local winners receive certificates and appropriate awards provided by participating corporations, individuals and the Philadelphia Branch NAACP.

At the National and Local levels, first, second and third place gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded.

The National ACT-SO cash awards are $1,000, $750, and $500 in each category. Ronald McDonald Charities matched this fund. In addition, winners may receive laptop computers and/or other gift items.

The local winners from the Philadelphia competition will join with winners from other NAACP chapters  from across the country for the National  ACT-SO Competition in Orlando, FL, July 11-14, 2013. Let's go Philadelphia talented youth!
