DUBAI, UAE - April 1, 2013 - PRLog -- The L'Oréal Foundation and UNESCO have announced that applications are now open for the 2013 Pan Arab Fellowships For Women in Science in its fourth consecutive year. The L'Oréal -UNESCO Pan Arab Fellowships ‘For Women in Science’ is one of the first regional programs launched by L’Oreal Foundation in 2010. This program aims at celebrating the phenomenal achievements of the region’s women scientists. Following the huge success of the L'Oréal-UNESCO Pan Arab Fellowships For Women in Science in its launch year, the program was extended in 2011 to include candidates from seventeen Arab countries.

Thierry Houssin, Managing Director of L'Oréal Middle East, talks about the partnership between L’Oréal and UNESCO founded on the basis of ensuring that women in science obtain the recognition and support they deserve:  “The Pan Arab Fellowships Program acknowledges the exceptional contribution of Arab women scientists in the advancement of scientific knowledge and sets them as role-models for younger generations. The awarded fellows for the last 3 years running, as well as those to be chosen this year, represent tomorrow’s scientists: creative, ambitious and possessed of the determination needed for a successful scientific career. We look forward to greater contributions by women scientists towards finding solutions to developmental challenges in the region.”

Since L’Oréal’s creation by chemist Eugene Schueller in 1909, science has been at the heart of the company, and L’Oréal is the industry’s biggest investor in research.  Over two-thirds of the people working in L’Oréal’s research centres are women.  This percentage is unmatched anywhere else in the industry.

Dr. Bechir Lamine, Director of the UNESCO Regional Bureau of Science and Technology for the Arab States, affirms: “Recognition of outstanding work by women scientists in Arab States underscores the importance assigned by both UNESCO and L'Oréal to the promotion of women in scientific research. It is a great pleasure for the UNESCO Regional Bureau of Science in Arab States to partner with L'Oréal in a program which aims to empower Arab women scientists, in serious recognition of their achievements and contributions to the progress of science and scientific research, and in acknowledging the role they play for the development of their countries.”

Applications will be adjudicated by a panel of eminent scientists, chaired by Dr. Nabiel Saleh. The selected winners will be awarded in a ceremony which will be held in UAE in November 2013.
