Shattered Glass Ensemble to Make Carnegie Hall Debut at Zankel Hall, Tuesday, May 7, 2013

NEW YORK - March 29, 2013 - PRLog -- The Shattered Glass Ensemble and its Artistic Director, violinist Elizabeth Woo, will offer a smashing artistic experience when the conductor-less string ensemble makes its Carnegie Hall debut at Zankel Hall on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 8 PM, with Ms. Woo as soloist.

In addition to music by Vivaldi, Bach, Mendelssohn, Penderecki and Sarasate, the concert will feature the world-premiere of Rhapsody No. 6, “Korean,” by Albert Markov, composed for and dedicated to Ms. Woo, inspired by the essay "Valley of May" by Korean writer Yoojung Kim and based on three Korean melodies.

The concert will be presented with support from Gangwon Province in Korea, site of the 2018 Winter Olympics. Ms. Woo is based in New York, but her hometown is Chuncheon in Gangwon Province, where she often returns for visits and concerts. In a 2008 national telecast there, Ms. Woo premiered a work for violin and Korean traditional instruments based on "Valley of May" for a centennial tribute to Yoojung Kim, a Chuncheon native. On a 2012 visit, she introduced Mr. Markov to "Valley of May," which has resulted in a new work for violin and western string instruments.

“This concert will have great meaning for me,” she says. “Having lived both in New York and Chuncheon, I’ve been searching for ways to connect the two cities musically. Chuncheon is regarded as the center of culture in Gangwon Province. I believe that having a work inspired by a writer from Chuncheon performed in New York by a musician connected to both places will be a major step in this direction.”

She adds, “Following this event, I will be starting a festival in Chuncheon, called ‘New York in Chuncheon Fest’ (May 26-29, 2013), where I’ll be bringing musicians from New York (including some Shattered Glass members and friends) to communicate through music. Programs will include works by such composers as John Adams and Elliott Carter – thus, this time, bringing music of America to Korea. I hope to keep on discovering new ways to connect with future concerts and festivals.”

Elizabeth Woo, Violinist

Elizabeth Woo has risen from the level of young prodigy to seasoned professional with remarkable speed. Her 2004 debut at Carnegie Hall as the youngest performer to play all of Paganini’s 24 Caprices for Solo Violin was evidence of her accomplishment.

In addition to Carnegie Hall, she has also performed at Lincoln Center and Merkin Concert Hall, and at the 2004 United Nations’ UNICEF memorial celebration. Ms. Woo has been invited for recitals in Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Mexico, Japan and Bulgaria, and has performed with the Bulgaria Symphony, Romanian National Constanza Orchestra, Venezuela Philharmonic, New Jersey Philharmonic, Bozeman Symphony and the Pyongyang Symphony of North Korea, as well as the Sungnam, KBS, Jeju, Mostly Philharmonic and Gangwon Province’s Orchestras of South Korea.

Ms. Woo’s involvement in the classical music scene of South Korea has led to her national acclaim as the “Best Outstanding International Musician of the Year” in 2002 by the Arts Critics Association as well as “Artist of the Year” in 2005 by the Gangwon Talent Support Foundation of Korea. Ms. Woo has recorded for EMI Classics Korea and Mook Sound.

Along with her focus on classical music, Ms. Woo enjoys collaborations in other genres as well, such as with the KBS Korean Traditional Orchestra, where she has performed a fusion of Korean traditional music and classical music.

Born in Freiburg, Germany, Ms. Woo returned to Korea as an infant. At the age of 10, she moved to the U.S., and is currently enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Albert Markov. Ms. Woo is the Artistic Director of Shattered Glass Ensemble.

Founded in January of 2012, Shattered Glass (SG) is a conductor-less string ensemble dedicated to re-imagining the concert experience. SG is a dynamic collection of global talent, with members representing Russia, Venezuela, Korea, China, Taiwan, and cities across the United States—all top young talent who came together for a common purpose: to present world-class performances. At the core of SG is a commitment to create a special relationship between audience and ensemble. Barriers typical of the classical music experience are shattered.

Members of Shattered Glass Ensemble hail from prestigious conservatories across the U.S. including New England Conservatory, The Juilliard School, and The Curtis Institute of Music, but all met while attending the Manhattan School of Music. Members have performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Merkin Concert Hall, and have performed as soloists with the Korean KBS Symphony Orchestra, Sofia Symphony Orchestra and the New Jersey Philharmonic. SG members also hold positions with prestigious orchestras such as the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

Virtuosic and versatile, Shattered Glass balances vibrant excitement with a meticulous respect for piece, composer and tradition. With a repertoire that ranges from Bach to Britten, Bartók, Schoenberg and Stravinsky, SG also offers innovative programming and collaborations with Grammy®-Award-winning pop artists.

In its inaugural season, SG’s projects included an album-launch performance with Grammy®-nominated hip-hop artists Kinetics & One Love (Warner Music Group) featuring Vita Chambers (Universal Records), after recently recording an arrangement of their hit, Sign Language; and a collaboration with A Moveable Feast at the TEDxEAST conference in Times Square. This season, in addition to making its Carnegie Hall debut, Shattered Glass Ensemble has been invited to the Chappaqua Orchestra Chamber Music Series and the Montauk Chamber Music Society, to Cinnaminson High School in New Jersey for a music seminar, and for another collaboration with Kinetics & One Love.
