Wal-Mart General Counsel Dr. Walter L. Sutton to Keynote at National Black Pre-Law Conference

HOUSTON - March 28, 2013 - PRLog -- The National Black Pre-Law Admissions & Preparation Conference and Law School Recruitment Fair is the nation’s premier information-sharing and networking empowerment event focused on encouraging the success of aspiring Black lawyers.  The purpose of the conference is to share critical information about what it takes to achieve the goals of getting into law school, succeeding in law school, and passing the bar exam.  It also directly addresses diversity issues and increases awareness of the career options available to those possessing a legal education, as well as advice on how to advance in one’s career.  Just as importantly, it aims to provide real life positive role models of successful African American lawyers who have beaten the odds to achieve success and who are committed to making a difference in their communities.  In keeping with this goal, the conference is excited to announce that Attorney Dr. Walter L. Sutton will serve as one of the featured keynote speakers at this year’s event.  

He currently serves as Associate General Counsel for Legal Administration and External Relations at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.  In this position, Dr. Sutton is an internal advocate for the Legal Department’s diversity initiatives.  He also collaborates with external stakeholders to promote diversity within the legal profession and the pipeline for future attorneys.  Prior to joining Wal-Mart in 2005, Attorney Sutton practiced law for 35 years in Detroit, Michigan, Houston, Texas, Washington, D.C., and Dallas, Texas.

He currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors for the National Bar Institute. He also serves on the American Bar Association’s Diversity Center Board. In addition, he is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Wiley College (“Home of the Great Debaters”), a historically Black college in Marshall, Texas.

Dr. Sutton earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Denver, his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan, his Master of Business Administration from the University of Dallas, and his Doctorate of Philosophy in Management Science from the University of Texas at Dallas.
